In the spring of 2008, Innovis Health had contacted us to assess several different areas within the facilities to relocate their pediatric clinic department. The Innovis administration staff, facilities staff, pediatric physicians, and pediatric nursing staff was included in meetings to develop the ideal needs assessment. The outcome of brainstorming meetings resulted in 18 exam rooms; 5 doctor offices; 5 nurse stations; 2 weigh rooms; 1 procedure room; 1 audiology room; child scale toilet room; clean/dirty supply areas; oncology support workstations; a classroom for Lamaze, parent, and child education classes; well and ill waiting areas; lactation screening room; lactation consultant office; car seat friendly registration area; and storage. The theme was designed surrounding a farm for the visiting children between the ages of 0 and 5, both well and ill. The design includes galvanized bucket light fixtures, and a “metal” wall covering of a silo that helps hide a structural column. A red barn created of laminate and wall covering separates the ill and well-waiting areas adorning plasma TVs on either side to entertain the guests. Small animal skin child-size cubes give children a sense of tactile texture. Each exam room has a different farm animal theme designated with a custom pop art print ranging from dragonflies to bunnies. The carpet tile flooring includes styles replicating areas of “grass” and “ponds” used for wayfinding as well as indicating where small children should stand at the proper distance while taking an eye exam.
